Brush Fire Endangering Natural Gas Well

Shortly after getting equipment back in service from the MVC, Rosedale Volunteers were alerted for a smoldering brush fire within feet of a natural gas well. The engine crew arrived and extinguished.

Motor Vehicle Collision

Rescue companies were alerted for a 2 vehicle crash with injuries and hazards in the 11000-block of Frankstown Road. Upon responding, police updated at least one patient was entrapped. Rescue technicians worked to free 2 patients, which were transported to a local trauma center by paramedics.

Bike Ride Reschedule

RVFD has rescheduled the RIDE FOR FIRE motorcycle tour. Riders will leave the fire station at 5806 Verona Road at 10 AM sharp. Pre-register by calling 412-798-0412. Riders will receive ride pins and food/beverage following the ride. Cost is $20 a rider and $15 passenger.

Multi-Company Training Drill

Firefighters from PH 222, 221, and Verona 285 gathered to train on vehicle collision operations. Crews split up, focusing on stabilization of vehicles in different positions, hazard control, and patient care. Thank you Verona and Lincoln Park for joining us, and as always thank to the firehouse chefs (you know who you are) for keeping us... nourished.

Residential Structure Fire

Shortly after arriving on scene for a reported structure fire, 285-Chief requested additional alarms bringing 216, 222, and 227 to the scene. Rosedale firefighters assisted with the initial interior attack, roof operations, ladders, and overhaul. 2 minor injuries were reported.

Propane Gas Hazard

Companies 224, 223, and 222 were dispatched for an odor of propane gas on Greenridge Drive. 222-Engine arrived to find a resident with several propane tanks leaking off. Crews investigated the hazard with the fire marshal.

Gas Main Break

Companies 223 and 222 were alerted by county communications for a reported main gas line struck by construction crews in the 6900-block of Shannon Road. 222 and 223 Engines arrived, placing hoselines to protect workers that were fixing the problem. Units remained on scene for hours to ensure safety.

Ike Rolls Into Allegheny County

Penn Hills was hit with remnants of Hurricane Ike with wind gusts reported near 70 mph. Volunteer firefighters responded to over 80 calls for assistance over hours, including trees into homes, a possible house fire, several downed utility lines, trees blocking roadways, transformer explosions, medical assistance calls and other various resident assistance calls.

Shed Fire

Companies 224, 223, and 222 were alerted by county communications for a reported shed fire on Greenridge Drive. 222-Engine arrived to find a small fire that was extinguished by neighbors. Firefighters overhauled to prevent extension.

MVC - Entrapment

Companies 216 and 166 were requested by police for a motor vehicle crash, with entrapment on 8th Street in Oakmont. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find heavy entrapment and requested 222-Rescue to assist with operations. Companies worked together with EMS to extricate patients that were taken to local trauma centers.

Physical Rescue - Wooded Area

Companies 224 was dispatched to assist EMS personnel off of Oakview Dr for an injured person about 1/2 mile into the woods, resulting from an ATV accident. Units arrived, requesting the rescue assignment filled, bringing 222-Rescue to the scene. Firefighters extricated the patient from the area using a stokes basket.

Vehicle Into A Residential Structure

Companies 222, 224, and 285 were alerted by communications for a passenger vehicle into a structure on Shannon Road near Quincy Dr. 222-Engine arrived, finding everyone self-extricated from the vehicle and inspected the structure.

Motor Vehicle Collision, Entrapment

222-Rescue and Engine responded to an MVC with entrapment on Coal Hollow Road, near Old Coal Hollow. Units arrived, finding a 2 vehicle crash, confirming entrapment. Medics transported 4 patients to Pittsburgh Trauma Centers. Rosedale units remained to assist the county reconstruction unit.

Rosedale Residents Step Up To Help Pets

The Rosedale Volunteers want to extend a thank you to our neighbors, Carol and John Rudolph, who just donated 2 Pet Oxygen Mask Kits, for animals in an emergency needing oxygen. The kits have been ordered through WagN4U, a company that provides first aid supplies for pets. After the delivery of the kits, Rosedale will be looking to sponsor a Pet 1st Aid Class for the community through the American Red Cross. Thanks Carol and John for making our community a safer place!

222nd Welcomes Quentin

Weighing in at 7 lbs, 6 ounces, Quentin Edward Turpin was welcomed into the world by Rosedale Firefighter Brian Turpin and, and Mom Deanna. We'll give them some time to get settled in and home from the hospital before we have him fill out his Junior Firefighter application... Congrats, Mom and Dad!!!

2 Alarm Residential Structure Fire

Companies 222 and 223 were dispatched for a reported residential fire on Fox Chase Dr. Police arrived on scene reporting everyone out of the house and requested a second alarm, bringing 224 to the assignment. 223-Engine arrived, establishing a water supply, with 222-Engine setting up at the scene, reporting flames through the roof. 224-Engine-1 was assigned Rapid Intervention on side D, while Engine-2 arrived to assist with suppression. Two firefighter injuries were reported, one injured knee and on fractured foot.

Brush Fire - Moore Avenue

222 was alerted by County Communications for a brush fire on a hillside on Moore Avenue. 222-Assistant arrived on scene within moments, holding 222-Engine to the assignment, returning others. Firefighters operated for about 30 minutes, extinguishing the fire.

Motor Vehicle Crash

Just before 17:00 Rescue Companies from 227, 222, and 223 were alerted for a one vehicle accident that struck a utility pole with wires down over the vehicle with possible entrapment. Chief 227 arrived on scene and reported one pole sheared with no entrapment. All other units were cancelled. Upon further investigation, R-227 discovered that two other utility poles were damaged. Two of the three pole were replaced by Duquesne Light. Units were on scene for about one hour assisting police with traffic control. Beulah Road remained closed until Monday for utilites to be restored.

Physical Rescue

Rosedale Volunteers responded to a female and a dog stuck on a hillside in the 400-block of Coal Hollow Road. While going for a walk, they slipped part way down the hillside, becoming stuck. 222-Rescue arrived on scene, making contact with the uninjured female, who was rescued by putting the tower ladder into place.

Multi-Company Training Drill

Penn Hills companies 222 and 225 met this evening to further training on a simulated structure fire. Crews worked on command functions, engine and truck company duties, fire attack, large area search and rescue, and rapid intervention team deployment. After a few scenarios, the boys from 225 went over some truck functions and overview of their equipment.

MVC - Hammil Road

222-Rescue assisted with a motor vehcile crash on the 800-block of Hammil Road. Units arrived finding one patient in the vehicle, while the PD K-9 located another over the hillside. Rescue personnel assisted EMS.

Rosedale Volunteers responded to a motor vehicle crash, with reported entrapment and fire on Railroad Avenue in Verona. Units responding were updated of a fully involved vehicle and an unresponsive patient. 222-Rescue arrived, finding the fire to be extinguished. 222 and 285 crews assisted EMS on scene, returning others to quarters.

Rosedale Volunteers responded to a motor vehicle vs. utility pole with reported entrapment on Beulah Road, along with 223 and 227. 222-Rescue arrived first on scene, determining that all patients were accessible, and no entrapment. The Engine and Rescue remained to control fluid hazards.

Residential Building Fire


Companies 223 and 222 were activated by County Communications to respond to something burning on a rear porch of a residence on Hulton Road. 223-Captain arrived on scene, followed by 222-Enigne, reporting a working porch fire. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and complete overhaul.

Firehouse Concerts welcomes the Chris Higbee Project on Saturday, August 16th at the Firehouse Ampetheatre, behind the Fire Station at 5806 Verona Road. Formerly the Poverty Neck Hillbillies, the Chris Higbee Project offers a unique sound of rock-country blend. Other performers include Joe Patrick and the Four on the Floor Band and One Lane Bridge. Gates will open at 5:00 PM.

222-Rescue responded to a motor vehicle collision, with injuries and fluid hazards on Saltsburg Road. While the Rescue Crew assisted EMS with extrication, firefighters landed an air medical unit behind the firehouse.

St. 221 and 222 were alerted for a multi car accident with Entrapment at the intersection of Nadine Road and ARB. 221 Assistant marked on the air requesting an additional rescue putting 227-Rescue on the assignment. While enroute police confirmed 1 entrapped. 221 Asst and 222 Chief arrived, finding 2 vehicles with severe damage, no entrapment. 227 Rescue was cancelled while leaving 221 and 222 on the response. Patients were transported to a Pittsburgh Trauma Center.

Rosedale Emergency Medical Tech's

Rosedale's membership is proud to announce two of our firefighters as newly certified EMT's: Dan Fitzhenry and Mark Menzietti. Fitz and Moose spent a few months of their own time attending training and didn't disappoint. Needless to say, their skills will be beneficial to the Penn Hills Community. Congrats, guys!

 

PennDOT: Lime Hollow Road Closure Begins Monday

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists Route 2064 (Lime Hollow Road) in Penn Hills Township, Allegheny County, will be closed to traffic beginning on Monday, July 28, 2008.

The closure is necessary as crews remove and replace a large cross pipe and complete additional drainage work at the intersection of Route 2064 (Lime Hollow Road) and Springdale Drive. Both roadways will be closed at the intersection. The closure will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday and will continue around-the-clock through late August 2008. The roadway will remain open for local traffic and businesses only; thru-traffic will not be permitted. Signs will be posted to guide motorists.

Old Hippos Pub - Commercial Structure Fire

222 and 225 Engines were dispatched by County Communications for a possible commercial building fire in the 4800-block of Verona Road, at the old Hippo's Pub - one of the oldest structures in the township, founded in 1888. As units marked up, 911 updated to receiving several calls reporting flames and smoke showing from all floors and the roof, with police units and 225-LT confirming. 221, 227 and 216 Truck were added onto the 2nd alarm assignment. 222-Engine arrived with heavy fire involvement, Chief ordering a defensive attack only, while monitoring for collapse. Engines utilized 3 hydrants, supplying 3 master streams (2 aerial). Units operated safely for over 12 hours, remaining for demolition crews to level the structure. Other PH Fire companies covered the township in the event of other emergencies through the incident.

Rosedale extends a thank you to the emergency units involved, along with the Port Authority, Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Squad, 7-11 and Molyneaux Carpet for helping to accomodate responders and allowing for rehabilitation and helping us go home safe.

Multi-Company Training Exercise

Penn Hills Firefighters from Stations 222, 221, and 225 combined weekly training to work together at a simulated commercial structure fire, at Thad Stevens Fire Dept. Crews worked on command assignments, interior attack, search and rescue, and focused on rescuing downed responders.

Engine-1 to Structure Fire, Engine-2 to Shooting Assist

222-Engine was requested on a Structural Assignment on Dersam Street, for a fire in a vacant residential structure. 222 crews threw ladders and provided a RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). While responding to assist, Engine-2 came across a shooting patient at Mt Carmel Road and the crew began basic life support until PH EMS arrived.

Structural Damage With Hazards

Rosedale Firefighters responded to a 3 vehicle crash on Verona Road that landed 5 people in local hospitals. Firefighters assisted Paramedic crews and contained spill hazards.

Multiple Gas Well Leaks

Companies 222, 221, and 225 were alerted to respond to the 4500-block of Verona Road to investigate a spewing gas well, filling structures with natural gas. 221-Assistant arrived, requesting 227 to check an additional well on Lime Hollow. Rosedale initiated a crew to go in to attempt to turn off the spewing well, while 225 and 221 crews provided a back-up line. 227 evacuated residences. With shutting the well down successfully, it was determined that the area was safe to allow residents back, and all fire units returned.

Rosedale Volunteers responded within seconds to a reported motor vehicle crash with 2 patients entrapped on Mark Dr. While en route, communications updated units that at least one of the patients was unresponsive and police were confirming entrapment. Fire-Rescue crews arrived, finding one car, into a telephone pole with extensive entrapment. Crews extricated both patients within minutes.

Save A Pet Decals Available

Rosedale VFD received delivery of our "Save A Pet" stickers, for your doors and windows. The decals are $5.00 and can be purchased at the station on a Tuesday evening, or by calling 412-798-0412. The decals help firefighters determine what kind of pets and how many are in your residence at a time of an emergency.
